Shooting Hunger: Combating Food Insecurity for Tennesseans

Members of the Rural 1st team shooting clays to combat food insecurity in Tennessee

The strength of community bonds is an essential part of what makes rural living special. That’s why we invest in initiatives that enrich and support our rural communities.

In Tennessee, we co-host Shooting Hunger, an annual fundraising event to address food insecurity in the community, alongside Farm Credit Mid-America, Tennessee Farm Bureau and Tennessee Farmers Cooperative.

The event brings community members together for an exciting day of sporting clay shoots. People can shoot for fun, sign up for competitions and win door prizes. The goal is to raise money to support local organizations that work tirelessly to ensure local families have reliable access to food.

The funds raised are gifted to regional and local food banks, schools, churches and other community organizations that have backpack programs providing meals to children. Since 2015, we’ve provided more than two million meals to hungry Tennesseans in all 95 counties.

“Shooting Hunger is more than just an event. It’s one way we fulfill our commitment to secure the future of rural communities,” Chris Coffey, regional vice president with Rural 1st said. “Every year we look forward to seeing the immediate impact the funds raised will have on families and children across the state facing hunger. It’s inspiring to see the difference our communities can make when we come together to address a common problem.”

Each year, Shooting Hunger takes place in West, East and Middle Tennessee. Shooters travel from as far as Nebraska to participate. To learn more about the event or to participate, visit the Shooting Hunger website.
