Investing in the Next Generation of Rural Leaders

Mason Gordon Scholars Program recipient assists in growing rural communities

The Scholars program benefits students who are passionate about careers that support rural living.

Mason Gordon, a recipient of the Scholars Program in 2018, exemplifies the impact of investing in the next generation of rural leaders. The scholarship helped fund Mason’s bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics at Purdue University, where he graduated with honors in 2020. He went on to earn a master’s degree in rural futures planning and innovation from the University of Galway in Ireland.

Mason credits the Scholars program for providing valuable resources to help students from rural communities develop the necessary skills to be effective leaders after graduation.

“I’m a firm believer that passionate people fuel the growth of rural communities, and that the involvement of young people is especially impactful,” Mason said. “Rural communities rely on dedicated, talented young people willing to step into leadership roles and help these areas prosper.”

Today, Mason is an economic development coordinator for HWC Engineering in Indiana. In his role, he plans and implements community and economic development projects focused on improving the quality of life for rural communities across Indiana.

One of the programs he focuses on is Accelerate Rural Indiana. Mason has helped the organization secure $50 million in funding to support housing, childcare programs and job opportunities in Indiana’s southeastern region.

“I grew up in a rural community. I’ve witnessed how people lift their own in times of need,” says Mason. “I’m excited to contribute to preserving these special and unique places across Indiana. The Scholars program helped me get there.”

Securing the future of rural communities is our primary mission at Rural 1st. That’s why we champion initiatives designed to create positive and lasting change in our communities, such as the Scholars program. The program supports students passionate about rural living and planning to pursue careers that enrich our communities.

The Scholars program provides $5,000 scholarships over a two-year period to rising college sophomores and juniors pursuing degrees in agricultural-related fields. It also includes a week-long learning and travel experience focused on leadership development and financial education. Together with our partners at Farm Credit Mid-America, more than $2 million in financial and educational support has been awarded over the last decade.
