Establishing a Rural Sanctuary and Family Legacy

Jennifer and Chris Swindle have strong ties to the rural lifestyle. Having grown up in rural Tennessee and Georgia respectively, they share fond memories of their childhoods and the freedom that came along with it. It’s no surprise that, after years of living in a suburban neighborhood, they longed to reconnect with their rural roots and find a home where their children could experience the same upbringing.

The Swindles’ search for their perfect property was frustrating—until fate intervened. As a lawyer, Jennifer discovered historic land in Knox County, Tennessee through her legal work. Built in 1899, the property sits on a serene lake, with ample space for the family’s outdoor lifestyle. As a contractor, Chris admires the quality craftsmanship; from the intricate crown molding to every bedroom’s lake view. The property’s rich history, once home to a therapeutic horseback riding nonprofit, only deepened their connection to it.

The land has become a sanctuary for their family. “Mornings bring the sunrise as we cook, and the sunset as we wind down—it’s as close to heaven as you can get,” Chris said. Jennifer and Chris shared that their children enjoy their newfound freedom outdoors and are outside making memories rather than reading about them. “They're much more confident in who they are,” Jennifer said. “What matters to us most is family and leaving a legacy.”

Jennifer and Chris credit Rural 1st with understanding their unique needs and helping secure the financing of their rural sanctuary. Rural 1st offers flexible interest rates, allowing customers to reevaluate their loan in what’s called a conversion once every year*. Additionally, their loan officer’s understanding of the Swindles’ complex self-employment statuses made the financing process seamless from start to finish. “We purchased when interest rates were high, but knowing we can adjust without another round of underwriting makes the future easier,” Jennifer said.

Thanks to Rural 1st, the Swindles are now Closer to What Matters®; their family and leaving behind their legacy. “Our son is already talking about being a veterinarian,” he said. “He wants to turn the property into his veterinary clinic and it’s inspiring because we're not just a part of something; we're passing something on.”
